my story
i was already a working animator my 30s in sydney producing layouts mostly, when i decided to go to art college in wagga to study ceramics
As it turned out i became very interested sculpture installations as well,
articulating space with minimalist materials like sticks poles and rope,
art povera style.
The point was - art as experience - not the creation of precious art objects
right time , right place
two forward looking teachers,
John Penny and Arthur Wicks
had put together a radical first year program to challenge the incoming students and rattle their pre conceptions about what art could be
fresh ideas / new ways of looking at things
i loved it
it shapes my thinking to this day
i owe a lot to some great teachers
john Penny, Arthur Wicks and John Elsegood
in my second year i was lucky enough to score a one man show at
Central st Gallery in Sydney
i just walked in , spoke to the near director , showed him photos of my sculpture installations and he said yes
very aussie naive approach, just give it a go mate ..
that's how it used to be
Later that year i took along my took along my sticks , poles and tape,
and made some installations responding to the gallery space -
art as experience
in my 3rd year James Mollion had a directive to collect work
of promising aussie artists
He visited Riverina College of Advanced Education and at the time i had
the use of a loft to install my work
James Mollisone saw what i was doing, asked to see me, we had a chat
and some weeks later he bought photos of my installations for
the National Gallery, in case i became an artist of note
I did not !
all that momentum stopped when i went back to animation
after i finished the course
Ive never fogotten the experience , kept my interest in art,
and for the past several years ive been exploring images again
lacking a studio i ve gone digital
drawing on a tablet, using xara as a compositor,
vectorising some images to acheive scale
scale gives dramatic presence
my inclination is the same,
what drive me is the dramatic, prioritising art as experience
rather than art as an object
you wil discover my journey includes
illustrative to abstract
first there is the experience of making,
then there is the experience of the viewer
the viewer completes the experience
at that point the job is done
even this site is designed
as an experience
so welcome
you the viewer
complete the experience
congratulations !
you are now part of the art ( smile )
